In this smartphone competitive world, everyday a new smartphone takes birth. Info

Sony launched the Xperia Z, its new flagship smartphone in the Indian market in the first week of March. The USP of the phone is its 5-inch 1080p HD display, in addition to its water and dust resistant build, and a 13.1-megapixel camera. It’s the second phone after the HTC Butterfly, to feature a full-HD display. However, it’s priced about Rs.7,000 cheaper than the HTC Butterfly at Rs. 38,990. Sony is also trying its best foot forward in promoting the phone in the Indian market with a star-studded marketing campaign. But does the phone stand out among other phones of the top strata of the high-end smartphone segment? We try to find out.

Likes

  • Brilliant HD screen
  • Excellent build quality
  • Dust and Water proof
  • Great performance
  • Decent battery back-up

Dislikes

  • Gets hot even after limited usage
  • Screen viewing angles could have been better
  • Low light photos appear grainy

Design

Similar to the LG Optimus G that we reviewed a few days back, the first thing that you notice about the phone is its industrial design. It looks like a big rectangular glass slab with clean lines that give the phone a no nonsense persona, and there are no chrome frames or other embellishments barring the power button which stands out a little.
As we mentioned, the phone sports a 5-inch screen, which essentially dominates the front of the phone while the rest is tempered glass with a reflective coating. The display is seamless with the rest of the front and Sony says that they’ve brought the touch panel closer to the display. The bezel is really thin and there are no hardware controls. The phone doesn’t have separate capacitive buttons for navigation and instead has onscreen buttons similar to Nexus devices. This is a welcome change and we’d like all phone makers to keep navigation consistent.

Display

After the HTC Butterfly, the Xperia Z is the second phone in the Indian market to sport a 1080p display. The phone sports a 5-inch TFT display that has a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels and a pixel density of 441ppi. The screen is bright and vivid, and text looks extremely crisp while app icons and images look sharp. Images and videos look spectacular thanks to the addition of Sony’s BRAVIA Engine 2.

Camera

XperiaZ-camsample4.jpg

The Sony Xperia Z sports a 13-megapixel Exmor RS rear camera with auto focus, Burst Mode, and LED flash. The phone’s camera app is feature rich featuring, Superior auto, Normal, Video, Burst, Picture Effects, Sweep Panorama and different Scene selection modes.

The Superior auto mode doesn’t let you customise granular settings barring that of Flash, Resolution, and Timer with the default resolution set to 3920×2940. The normal mode allows you to tinker with settings like Exposure value, White balance, ISO, and others. The camera also includes image and video stabilisation.

Software / User Interface

The Sony Xperia Z ships with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. It’s not the most recent version, but that’s consistent with other Android phones in the market. On its part, Sony has promised that the phone will shortly receive the Android 4.2 update. Sony has included its own UI skin on top of the software but it’s not as deep as HTC’s Sense UI or LG’s Optimus UI, and is rather more close to the stock build. Sony says that the unified UI will bring the same user experience to tablets and phones, and include its media apps.

XperiaZ-UI-1.jpg

The unlocking gesture of the lock screen resembles the motion of your finger through a set of window blinds and we’ve not seen this on another phone as of yet. The lock screen also offers shortcuts to directly unlock and initiate the Walkman (for playing music) and the Camera app. However, unlike the Optimus G, you cannot customise the unlocking animation or change the app shortcuts.

Battery

The Xperia Z is powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm S4 Pro quad-core processor with 2GB RAM onboard, and an Adreno 320 chip for processing graphics. The HTC Butterfly and the LG Optimus G also feature the same chipset. There is 16GB of internal storage, which is expandable by another 32GB via a microSD card.

With Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the overall experience of navigation through the interface was extremely impressive, thanks largely to Project Butter and all the power under the hood. We did not experience any lag at all while launching apps, playing games, scrolling web pages or switching between apps.

My Verdict

The Sony Xperia Z is one of the best Android phones we’ve used combining a major set of features, a great HD screen and great build quality. The phone’s IP55 and 57 dust and water resistant body make it ideal for people who’re always on the move and/or a little careless with handling their phones.

Compared to the HTC Butterfly, the phone’s Rs. 38,990 price tag makes it better priced. But comparing it to other non-HD screen flagships, the price is a bit steep.

Info

Steve Hemmerstoffer of Nowehereelse.fr and Martin Hajek just posted a new concept of the 4-8 inch screened iPhone 6, based on the rumored features including 4.8-inch screen which competes with Android smartphones that are similar in size.

And these are a touch of their own creativity:
  • Due to a bigger screen, an additional column of apps could be added to the Home screen and instead of 4 apps on the dock there would be 5.
  • An ultra-thin/sleek design.
  • Instead of iPhone’s current Home button, it would be replaced with a clickable display- which was inspired by the clickable trackpad currently on the MacBook.
  • Although with a bigger screen, it would be a 4.8 inch edge to edge display so that the size of the phone wouldn’t be increased proportionally.
  • The casing on the back of the phone would have chamfered edges and anodized aluminum coating- inspired by the iPod touch 5G/iPad Mini.

Facebook announced on 7th Feb, 2013, a important redesign of its News Feed, News Feed is the front page that users see when they login to their account on Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg explained the new News Feed as a "personalized newspaper" that is more visual which  allows users to choose the topics they're most interested in. The images and links to articles are bigger, making it easier to see on mobile screens.

But users will now be able to drill down into topic-specific news feeds - one for music, another for photos, another for the publications, celebrities or brands they follow. That choice is aimed at addressing a concern raised by advertisers and content publishers like news sites: under the old system, it was difficult for their followers to see everything the companies have posted.

The redesigned News Feed was clearly inspired by the ubiquity of cellphones, particularly in how easy they make taking and sharing photos online. Mr. Zuckerberg said half of all posts on the News Feed now are pictures, up from 25 percent a year ago. The pictures will show up bigger in the new feed.

Facebook said it will begin rolling out the changes to the Web version immediately, with mobile apps to follow.

Info

HTC Butterfly is the HTC's first 5-inch phone with 1080p display. It was first released in Japan as J Butterfly and later in US. However its price is Rs. 45,000. Lets see its details and find out if this price is enough for this phone or not ??

Hardware

The design of this phone is really amazing. One thing I noticed that despite of 5-inch screen, the phone doesn't look awkward to hold and has a thin and slim body like a girl :)

The phone has rounded corners and feels very thin. The back of the phone has a soft rubberised matte finish, and feels nice to hold. The 8-megapixel camera lens is located towards the top. Unlike the One X and One X+, the lens unit doesn't protrude out and is flush with the body of the phone, which makes it look more elegant.

A single LED flash is located just next to the lens. Like the One X, the phone doesn't have a removable back cover. There's glossy HTC branding engraved in the middle, and the Beats audio branding and the speaker outlet, towards the bottom of the phone.

HTC has used Corning Gorilla Glass 2, making the screen durable, and comparatively more resistant to scratches. There's a greyish brown metal strip right above the earpiece, which gives the phone a premium feel. The 2.1-megapixel front-shooter is located at the left side, below the earpiece. The front also features three capacitive touch buttons (Home, Back and Menu/ App Switcher) and their markings.

Tethered vs. Untethered

Tethered Jailbreak – this means that if you EVER reboot, restart or lose power to your device post jailbreak, then you will need to boot your device up connected to a computer to enable the Jailbreak functions to work.

Untethered Jailbreak – As you might imagine this is the reverse of the information above. An untethered Jailbreak is what we aspire to, and is the ‘ideal’ solution. It means that once the kernel has been patched and the Jailbreak procedure is complete, you can power down, hard reset or reboot your device as often as you like without issue.

Untethered Jailbreak in iOS 6.0, 6.0.1 using evasi0n

If you haven't jailbroken your idevice yet then it is the right time. Follow the steps below to get untethered jailbreak.

1. Download for Windows - Evasi0n.exe  |  Mac - Evasi0n.dmg

2. After download, open it.

3. Connect your idevice to your computer and click 'Jailbreak'.

4. Wait.........

5. Unlock Device

6. Unlock your idevice and click ''Evasi9n jailbreak'' icon.

7. Wait....

8. Its done !!!!

~ Now you have untethered jailbroken your iDevice easily using Evasi0n.

Info

If you couldn't stop to have your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch 4 jailbroken tethered on iOS 6.x, you will be glad to know there is a way to Jailbreak Untethered without having to restore your device back to iOS 5.0, 5.1.1. In this tutorial, I'm gonna show you how to convert tethered jailbreak to untethered jailbreak in iOS 6.0, 6.0.1 using Evasi0n 6.x Untether.

Jailbreak

If you already have tethered jailbreak on your Apple device then follow the below steps and If you haven't done jailbreak yet then click here.

1. Open your homescreen.

2. Launch 'Cydia' app from your jailbroken device.

3. With Cydia up and running, refresh its sources by going into the Changes tab and tapping Refresh.

4. Once the sources have finished being refreshed you will need to go into the Search tab and search for : evasi0n 6.x Untether

5. Install the Evasi0n iOS 6.x Untether package to your device and then reboot it normally by holding down the Power button until you see “Slide To Power Off appear.”

6. Turn your device back on and after Evasi0n does its thing it should be up and running in an untethered state.

~ Wallah !!! Now you have a untethered jaibroken device. Now install as many as cracked apps without having any tension of restarting phone.

Unboxing

The box of the Galaxy Grand Duos in India has the device, a charger, handsfree, USB cable and documentation along with the 2100 mAh battery pack. The final retail box will also have the flip cover and bundled downloads, along with 50 GB of Dropbox for your account.

Hardware

At first the Galaxy Grand looks like a fuse between the S3 and the Note 2, however it has features of neither (except the looks). The Samsung Galaxy Grand is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, it has 1 Gb of RAM and 8GB internal storage . The Grand also belongs to the DUOS series since it a dual sim phone and fared quite well in our benchmarks video. The front of the device has a 5 inch 480×800 px display which surprisingly is very clear and vivid with good outdoor visibility.

Camera

On the back, the Samsung Galaxy Grand features an 8 megapixel primary camera with LED flash. The build quality of the phone is also standard Samsung style, so plastics all round, keeping manufacturing costs low for the device.

Software

Samsung Galaxy Grand comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS and Touch Wiz designed for Jelly Bean. So Samsung though it fair enough to stuff the phone with features like “direct call” and “popup video” from the Galaxy S3 and Note 2.

Price

The price of Samsung Galaxy Grand i9082 Duos is Rs 21,500 / US $ 380
